Making your child feel loved and appreciated can be different for everyone. Parents show their love affection and affirmation in different ways. Sometimes it is time or touch, others it is gifts, acts of service, or verbal affirmations. In a world of Build A Bears, American Girl Dolls, vacations like Universal Studios or Disney....co-parents/single parents can compete against image, expectations, and even each other to the detriment of the child.
So what if you find yourself honestly wanting to be the "favorite" mom or dad? How do you catch it before permanently damaging the family dynamic, or the development of your child(ren), or squashing the potential of creating a lifetime of wonderful memories?
Today we dig into a great article we found that gives some insights on this. We briefly touch on how competition between co-parents and giving children "power" to control our behavior as parents can even lead Parental Alienation, Disneyland Parenting, and situations where children learn false life lessons like:
Love is tied only to money/gifts/indulgences... (Money=Love)
You can get what you want through manipulation (including more privileges/less responsibility)
You can find it HERE.
The key takeaway is that parents should know better than to thrust their children into a situation where they are in this kind of position. Co-parents can be communicative, civil, and non-competitive and actually be stronger together (aside from the personal baggage). By working together instead of competing, co-parents are actually stronger, and can give their children a safe, stable, and loving home where the kids actually thrive.

Single Parent Advocate is dedicated to equip, empower, and encourage single parent families such that those that need help, get help, and those who want to help, can. Over 1 in 4 children in America today reside in a single parent household. That accounts for a large population of single parents that are working hard to navigate the journey of parenting alone.
Many of those struggle at work and home. The majority hang in the gap between poverty and self sufficiency. Single Parent families are all very different, and most of these parents face internal and external forces that cause them to struggle as they raise their children alone.

Why does my child's behavior trigger me? Let's See...

Do dishes, open doors, germy fingerprints, spelling tests, or something else drive you to act out of proportion? How do we best deal with feelings like fear, sadness, anger, shame, guilt, anxiety/trauma, stress, frustration, feeling disrespected....fill in the blank...?
The truth is, we get triggered when something simple (or complex) takes us into our own past, it takes us "back", and we lose self-control. Could it be as simple as knowing our own self better, or being more aware of when we are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired?
In this episode, Darrell and Stacie from Single Parent Advocate. dig into times when we as single parents can get triggered by our children and situations that arise where we feel out of control, consciously, or perhaps unconsciously.

In this episode, Brent from RACC-TV joins Darrell and Stacie from Single Parent Advocate.
Together we dive into structure, routines, expectations and how boundaries during the new school year can be complicated amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Issues like mask/no mask, vaccine/no vaccine confront all of us as we all work to feel safe, and also consider others' needs to be respected while we give voice our own concerns. Being considerate has never been more complicated it seems...especially if you and/or your children are vulnerable.
We dig into how we react instinctively by "locking others out", or "closing the door" to protect ourselves or others.
Key takeaways were that we remain flexible with ourselves and those around us, give opportunities for grow in trust, and also, be brave and transparent about our feelings when we need to "pull back".
We consider scheduling, dealing with differences, taking turns, not being overly sensitive, and creating opportunities for trust to be grown-especially when we feel out of control.
We hope you are all having a safe a good experience as school has started!!!

Meet Greg Wheeler- Author of Single Dad Essentials and Certified Life Coach for Single Parents and Families
Greg draws on his life experience and training to share strategies on divorce, co-parenting, and life as a single father. He aspires to help single parents with topics such as creating a new parenting relationship with a former spouse, creating co-parenting agreements, the value of community, disciplining children, self-care, dating and more.
In today's Podcast, Greg covers the perspective that each of us has an active part in creating the life we are living. He discusses that while each of us is inherently GOOD, when life happens, we buy into false beliefs in effort to cope and survive. These false beliefs about ourselves can range from assuming you are unlovable, unworthy, and/or insignificant, among others. They affect our relationships with spouses, ex-spouses, children, co-workers, and more.
How would it feel to heal? How would it feel to create a life filled with healthy self-esteem and relationships? Let's Talk!

Here's the headline: Darrell gave his 8 year old daughter an iPad for her birthday. It ended up being a great conversation and we wanted to dig into this a bit. In an age when the television can be a babysitter, and so can technology, how do we set our families up to win in this area, especially with society and schools moving faster and faster toward online teaching and learning? Not to mention the social pressures presented by social media as well. Then there is the need for effective communication as well.
We found a great article online that gives some great input on what to look out for when too much tech starts to affect your children or teens. It also gave some smart starting points on how to approach and model a balanced approach in our homes. We hope you all find it helpful for you and your family too!

Sometimes life makes us feel small. Every moment of every day we have a choice to make about our state of mind when faced with the loss of identity that comes from job/career shifts...or transitions of any kind like many of us face.
Kimberly Roush of All Star Executive Coaching advises to "go slow to go fast" and invest time to figure out our unique combination of gifts, values, and strengths as we step into a new chapter in our lives at work. She also reminds us that no person, no situation can ever take away what we each uniquely bring to the world.
Believing in our own inner greatness is sometimes tough in the middle of transition at work, in relationships, in the economy, and certainly in our culture.
How do we amplify the good and turn off the negative voices in our heads as we search for clues and call on courage to become our most authentic, grateful, and resourceful selves? What is the most meaningful experience we can recall that gives us direction moving forward. Join us as we hear from her about how to "Be Inspired and Grow", "Believe in Greatness" and get "Back In the Game".

This is Part 2 - we just couldn't cover everything in one episode! Join in as we continue the topic regarding dating as a single parent!
If you are a single parent, no doubt, you have had mixed feedback as it relates to dating.
Some single parents are comfortable casting their nets with a heart and eye toward building and/or rebuilding a marriage and family. Others choose to focus on raising their children first, leaving dating and romance on the back burner.
Some single parents search high and low looking for a new love using dating apps and services like Single Parent Meet, Bumble, e-Harmony, Match.com, and the list goes on. Others, join a church, a social group, or build a business or side hustle.
Regardless of what is comfortable for you, there are some important considerations for parents, like:
1. Are you ready to date?
2. What considerations should be made for the children?
3. How do you manage the time & resources it takes for this?
4. How can you avoid slip ups?
Join us and let's talk about it.
Additionally, we found a GREAT READ if you are asking yourself these questions! In fact, you can purchase the book for yourself, and support our work as well!
Just go to Smile.Amazon.com, Select Single Parent Advocate as your Charity of Choice, and then, Find the book HERE!

"Dads will go the distance, and be the toughest of the tough, the strongest of the strong. The downside is that Dads will often not ask for help when they need it. We want to help the Single Dads this Father's Day and let them know that they matter and that we acknowledge how hard they are trying to raise their kids!"

Being a parent is often hard and being a single parent can be even harder without support.
Single Parent Advocate wants to help empower and partner with single parents on their parenting journey. Single Parent Advocate is dedicated to equip, empower, and encourage single parent families such that those that need help, get help, and those who want to help, can.
