Competitive Co-Parenting is a Dangerous Spiral for Single Parent Families.- What are we doing to our kids when we COMPETE?
Making your child feel loved and appreciated can be different for everyone. Parents show their love affection and affirmation in different ways. Sometimes it is time or touch, others it is gifts, acts of service, or verbal affirmations. In a world of Build A Bears, American Girl Dolls, vacations like Universal Studios or Disney....co-parents/single parents can compete against image, expectations, and even each other to the detriment of the child.
So what if you find yourself honestly wanting to be the "favorite" mom or dad? How do you catch it before permanently damaging the family dynamic, or the development of your child(ren), or squashing the potential of creating a lifetime of wonderful memories?
Today we dig into a great article we found that gives some insights on this. We briefly touch on how competition between co-parents and giving children "power" to control our behavior as parents can even lead Parental Alienation, Disneyland Parenting, and situations where children learn false life lessons like:
- Love is tied only to money/gifts/indulgences... (Money=Love)
- You can get what you want through manipulation (including more privileges/less responsibility)
You can find it HERE.
The key takeaway is that parents should know better than to thrust their children into a situation where they are in this kind of position. Co-parents can be communicative, civil, and non-competitive and actually be stronger together (aside from the personal baggage). By working together instead of competing, co-parents are actually stronger, and can give their children a safe, stable, and loving home where the kids actually thrive.

Single Parent Advocate is dedicated to equip, empower, and encourage single parent families such that those that need help, get help, and those who want to help, can. Over 1 in 4 children in America today reside in a single parent household. That accounts for a large population of single parents that are working hard to navigate the journey of parenting alone.
Many of those struggle at work and home. The majority hang in the gap between poverty and self sufficiency. Single Parent families are all very different, and most of these parents face internal and external forces that cause them to struggle as they raise their children alone.
Being a parent is often hard and being a single parent can be even harder without support. Single Parent Advocate wants to help empower and partner with single parents on their parenting journey.
Single Parent Advocate is dedicated to equip, empower, and encourage single parent families such that those that need help, get help, and those who want to help, can.
Thank you for being a part of our single parent family community!
