Single Parents Finding our Path to Success- How to Land on our Feet During Career Transitions - Finding New Horizons in our Work
When you are the only wage earner in your home, and raising children alone, career and job changes can strike fear in our hearts and minds. Job loss can leave us hurt, or even bitter. However, there are SO MANY resources available to help us land on our feet like Career One Stop and local organizations affiliated with them. Here are a few ideas to help:
Be Open to Change....If we can learn to be more comfortable with changes, we can protect our mental wellbeing and land on our feet.
Remember you are not alone - there are many going through this
Identify your resources - be sure to ask for help, apply for assistance.
Cultivate a network of support - isolation and "hiding" is not the answer. Attend networking events, get in touch with your local chamber of commerce, talk with friends and fellow parents. Don't be afraid to share your experience with those who might be able to equip or empower you and your family. Take one step out the door, and learn about others.
Make your job search your full time focus. Keep or maintain a routine. Join a collaborative working office like Venture X or other types of shared office spaces. "Your job is now finding a job." Be curious, learn new things. Give yourself some grace and have fun meeting new people.
Take care of your mind and body. Maintain your physical wellness. Exercise, eat well, get your sleep. Remember you cannot take care of your children or secure a job if you are not physically, mentally, and spiritually centered.
Pick a path that suits YOU and your family. Things change. Take inventory about your needs such as flexible location or hours, child care. Make a wish list about what will support your family well.
Don't Get Stuck - Learn something new and be open to educating yourself, getting new certifications, or continuing your education. Be willing to learn and explore your interests. Perhaps explore freelancing on Upwork, Fiver, and other options like becoming self employed. Be open to broaden your perspective to welcome success from multiple avenues.
